Dear Readers,

Now is the middle of the year for us here at Contactless Intelligence (that's right, we consider July to be the middle – not June, so live with it!). It gives us a chance to catch our breath and take a stab at predicting what we think will be the big topics for the second part of the year concerning players in the contactless and NFC market. So with out further ado; here are our Top Ten.

1. Olympic contactless mobile payment feedback is going to swamp all media for at least two months. A lot of people have a great deal riding on this rollout so results are going to be analyzed and then over-analyzed to the Nth degree. However, the question to be asked is "can the results that are achieved through a self-contained payment/retail eco-system be transferred, and relate to, the high street in general?" We will know in the next six months.

2. Look out for the Isis mobile wallet rollout in August. A lot of preparation has gone into this launch but, as always, will the take-up be there with enough retailers willing to take the 'plunge'?

3. The launch of the iPhone 5 later this year will include Passbook. This may or may not be seen as a mobile wallet but expect the press to go crazy over whatever is brought out and expect to see more QR codes and barcodes in use. Certainly expect to get sick of the term NanoSIM.

4. With a forecasted explosion in QR and 2D barcodes in the next six months aimed at mobile wallets, expect to see a call for mobile standards convening these 2D codes. There is a no 'real' standard existing today so the specification groups will no doubt demand one. Things could get complicated here.

5. These codes will also be used in more and more loyalty applications and so we expect to see a 'real' explosion in the mobile loyalty segment. This will be a key growth area in the next twelve months and could change the shape of the mobile wallet landscape.

6. Travel apps connected to mobile wallet solutions could be a match made in heaven. With the rise of the 'call a cab'-type applications available on your smart phone – what could be better than paying with your mobile after the cab has arrived? Think about it.

7. Expect to see more from alliances such as the OSPT. Open standards for transportation systems are going to increase in importance as more transportation systems move into the contactless ticketing arena. You only have to look at what is happening in Russia and Eastern Europe to realize that the market is nowhere near a saturation point yet.

8. More peer-to-peer mobile payment applications. Either with a dongle or more likely via phone apps. With banks getting heavily into the mobile banking arena and the rise of the 'mobile banking cloud', this could be the 'real' start of moving money from person to person on a cashless basis.

9. The above 8 points all hinge, of course, on people actually using these applications and methods. And the most common question that will be asked is, "are they secure"?. So far, no one has tackled this question head-on. That's a mistake - because it's not going to go away.

10. Our final forecast. Expect to see a fall out of partners and joint ventures. After covering this space for so long and witnessing how development times are speeding up, we just can't imagine that some of the of the announced joint developments will stand up the increasing turnaround time required by a market that is moving into full momentum. Corporations may have deep pockets but it will be those that can act in an agile manner that will reap the greater reward. This, many will realize, can be more easily achieved through independent action rather than committee. You have been warned.

So there you have it – our predictions for the next six months. We will also be taking a short break so there will be no Newsfeed next week but we will return in the second week of August. So until then – enjoy the Olympics!

Regards,

Steve Atkins
