Dear Readers,

As this editorial should find you right in the middle of the Olympics, it should come as no surprise that we have a few articles available on Contactless Intelligence that pertain to the contactless nature of things surrounding the Olympics.

From Visa's 804 million spending splash (forecasted) (http://wp.me/p1Jrjn-L0) to the unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with Visa mobile payment solution (http://wp.me/p1Jrjn-Lk) and a look at Identive's contactless entry and payment solutions at a prestigious hospitality venue during the London 2012 Olympic Games (http://wp.me/p1Jrjn-Lc) – we hope we have a little something for everyone.

Next week we will be featuring an article directly from the Olympic Park as no other but our own Channel Director Susan Hicks goes to the Games to try out the Visa mobile payment solution using the Samsung Galaxy handset. We shall also be asking Visa if there is feedback so far from the athletes themselves. We may be a little
cynical but considering how quiet London seems to be at the moment  - despite the Games - we aren't expecting any major findings to be announced yet. We hope to be corrected on this issue.

Other news last week saw the release of the Google Wallet 2.0. Primarily, the update (re-vamp?) is based around a cloud-based version that opens up the Wallet to cards from all major U.S. payment brands, but which continues to use NFC to enable consumers to tap to pay and redeem offers in physical stores. (http://bit.ly/N3PbWr ). All well and good, but after announcing that all major credit cards were accepted, American Express were quick to point out that they have no such agreement with Google (http://dthin.gs/MneV3U ), which soured the whole enthusiastic launch somewhat.

Contactless reader and NFC software vendor Vivotech was in the news last week with rumors of an imminent shut-down (http://bit.ly/PeQIXT). These rumors were refuted by Vivotech themselves (http://bit.ly/PeQNuE ) but further 'leaks' continued to tell a bigger story of a company that may have lost its way after being at the forefront of the industry for so long. A victim of the 'bleeding edge'? Who knows – but we shall be looking for further information on this story throughout August.

Finally, a big congratulations to Russell West of Proxama; the winner of this month's Intelligence. A BlackBerry Bold 9900 is on it's way to you! Look out for another Intelligence soon.

Until next week,
Regards,

Steve Atkins

Infographic: London 2012 Economic Report

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will deliver an £804m consumer spending injection for the UK this summer and an economic legacy worth £5.33bn by 2015, according to Visa’s report, “Realising a Golden Opportunity: Visa Europe’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Expenditure and Economic Impact Report“. Visa have also produced a unique infographic providing an easily-digested visual summary of the report’s findings, and you know how much we love infographics!

Unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with Visa mobile payment solution

Samsung-sponsored athletes attending the London 2012 Olympic Games will be given limited edition Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphones, identical to the high-street phone, but enabled with Visa’s mobile payment application, Visa payWave for contactless payments using the S3′s NFC chip. We are supposed to get our hand on the phone next week but in the meantime, Recombu.com is currently trialling the phone, so here’s a look at what’s in the box.

Identive goes Dutch with NFC solution during Olympics

Identive announced that it is providing innovative contactless entry and payment solutions at prestigious hospitality venues during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Identive’s Polyright visitor management solution will enhance security for up to 10,000 visitors to the Olympic Club, located next to the stadium in the Olympic Park. The solution includes the issuance of personalized gold, silver or bronze contactless ID badges for International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, VIPs, invited guests and staff. The badges grant secure entry to the Club and are being deployed in conjunction with Identive’s Polyright identity management system, which includes gate control, monitoring capabilities and support services.

In cooperation with the leading Dutch bank Rabobank, Identive is providing multi-use cashless payment cards for more than 100,000 visitors at Heineken House hospitality events held at the prestigious Alexandra Palace. As previously announced, the contactless cards utilize Identive’s innovative tomPAY™ near field communication (NFC) tag technology, which allows them to be used both as conventional cashless payment cards and as  NFC payment stickers for mobile phones. The cards also are compatible with the Company’s Multicard Cashless Betalen™ mobile payment solution, which is widely deployed in the Netherlands. Dutch Olympic visitors who obtain an Identive cashless payment card will be able to peel off the NFC tag, affix it to their mobile devices and download Cashless Betalen apps to enroll on their return home. Identive expects the total number of Cashless Betalen users to exceed 200,000 this summer.

“We are very pleased to provide some of our latest technology products and solutions for the use of visitors to the Olympics,” commented Ayman S. Ashour CEO and chairman of Identive Group. “It is particularly exciting that the first broad deployment of our tomPAY mobile payment products and our new Polyright identity management systems are taking place at Olympic venues. Identive’s growth in the consumer ID market and in particular multi-application environments has been an important part of our strategy, and we are seeing increased demand for our secure ID solutions at large events, from summer festivals across Europe to the London Olympics.”
