Dear Readers,

Last week we all made our annual pilgrimage to Barcelona to discover what was new in the world of mobile. It was not time wasted. New devices, new technology but - more importantly for us - new applications featuring NFC technology and applications.

There was a very strong focus on NFC smart tags and mobile payments - far more than previous years. I saw very interesting demos from the likes of SK Telecom, NXP and handset makers that had developed new uses for NFC devices beyond those of contactless payments. Forrester just published a report recommending interactive marketers to Trial NFC To Connect The Real World With Mobile. While I now believe that NFC/mobile payments won't become mass market in 2012, it is evident that now is the time for companies to start thinking how to integrate it into their mobile road maps.

The mobile payment battle is also heating up with new strategic agreements between card networks and operators (Vodafone/Visa, Telefonica/MasterCard), Facebook, and carriers — not to mention eBay/PayPal's stronger presence at the show this year. Even RIM wanted to show use how they were using NFC - in fact, they wanted visits to really 'like' them using the technology

I think I have to tip my hat at NXP though, they really tried to show us what life would be like using the technology in their NXP NFC Cafe. Well done to NXP NFC team. And  a big thank you goes out to Nokia for taking us 'behind the scenes', so to speak and find out much more about their NFC Michelin Guide app. We're really looking forward to that.

Many thanks to all who took the time to speak with me – I know it's a very intense week and so I really appreciate you taking the time. So, after last weeks travel and talk, it's back to normal, again. That is, unless you're doing CeBit this week…

Until next week.
