Dear Readers,

With the struggle for mobile wallet supremacy that is taking place in the market, we have a couple of interesting news pieces this week. After all, this is going to become a very hot marketplace very soon with more and more groups jumping into the space. What's more, whatever you were in the past (be it MNO, search engine giant or bank) does not mean that you will be in a stronger or weaker position to control the lucrative mobile wallet market. Everything is up for grabs.

That's why it was interesting to see a small article this week (origin. Reuters) that points to the fact that Google has been 'leaning' on developers to use their payment system rather than their rivals systems (cnet.co/wUsLd6). After working in the technology industry for so long - behaviour of this kind is nothing new (everyone remember Microsoft and the internet browser wars?). But if this is true it shows that despite continued grumblings over the state of their wallet platform (bit.ly/xuYaPX), the company is still serious about mobile payments. Javelin Research have also asked the question regarding who will lead in mobile purchasing in their latest report - it's quite interesting (bit.ly/ycZy3S). And this is despite news that Apple have yet another patent for the mobile wallet (bit.ly/ABnSFZ) or that PayPals CEO refutes that Apple will ever really step into the payment arena (bit.ly/wr0iiB).

Still, as with most ventures that move forward, there is alway the backbiting. Here are a couple of interesting negative stories concerning the 'lack of' and 'failure of' mobile payments. (Most Consumers Shown To Lack Rabid Interest In Mobile Payments bit.ly/AmIjzN), (The contactless card payment revolution that is failing to take off and costing YOU money bit.ly/wTCboq). See if you agree with them.

Although I find that their logic is flawed, the industry MUST be doing something right if that last bastion of middle England (Earth?), the Daily Mail, is up in arms against us! (bit.ly/yDnVOZ)

Until next week.

Washing machines get 'smarter' thanks to NFC

What if your washing machine could detect what you've put in the laundry and adjust its own settings automatically? Showcased at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany, NXP Semiconductors demonstrated its RFID- and NFC-enabled smart washing machine featuring "advanced yet practical" wireless functionality (their words - my wife thinks differently...).

The most popular feature of the demo is fabric detection: The washing machine reads information about the fabric type and color from RFID-tagged buttons, helps you avoid mixing white and dark laundry, and optimizes the washing program based on the characteristics it reads from both the clothing and the detergent itself.

Another popular feature of the demo is NFC-based maintenance: Using an NFC-enabled phone, an authorized maintenance technician can perform diagnostics on the smart washing machine onsite, change its status, upgrade firmware, and launch an app that communicates directly with the manufacturer’s service center.

“Major home appliances are becoming ‘smarter’ by the day - yet we’ve only started to explore the universe of possibilities when it comes to two-way communication,” said Jan Willem Vogel, senior director, industrial applications marketing, NXP Semiconductors. “We’re particularly excited about our new smart washing demonstrator, which brings together our advanced application insights, our expertise in RFID and NFC, as well as our broad-based understanding of the complex sub-systems driving white goods today. The demo also showcases the breadth of NXP’s portfolio - the most extensive in the semiconductor industry when it comes to home appliances.”

mCASH Mobile Payment App

In continuing our theme of showcasing new NFC/mobile money companies out there we present mCASH. The company say their solution can connect to any electronic funding source including your bank account (mCASH Bank API).

This makes it also very easy to make person to person payments from your address book using phone numbers. Users can also make payments to mobile merchants, internet merchants, physical stores using QR or NFC (Contactless). More details can be found at www.mCA.SH.
