Dear Readers,
It is safe to say that last week, the biggest news for the contactless payment industry was Barclaycard's announcement that they were to begin issuing Visa mobile payment stickers, named PayTag, as a way to jump-start (our words - not theirs) the mobile contactless payment market. Or capture a large share of the market over their rivals – you decide.
Available immediatly and at no cost exclusively to Barclaycard Visa cardholders, Barclaycard PayTag is an extension of a customer’s credit card account. At a third of the size of a normal card, it can be stuck on the back of any mobile phone. Once attached, it can be used to make payments of £15 and under, rising to £20 in June.
I have to applaud Barclaycard on this venture. Although many have spoken about this particular payment method, I think (and am happy to be corrected) that no other institution has actually announced such a large issuance. The immediate question? What this will do for the NFC mobile handset market and how it will impact implementation of the mobile wallet? I mean, come on, how many stickers can you put on your phone before it starts to resemble a sponsored F1 race car?
Luckily, we will not have to wail much longer to find out what the collective pulse of the industry on this topic is: Only three days to be exact, because then it is once again time for the annual Contactless Intelligence Spring Conference and the Contactless & Mobile Awards in London. There will be many views on this topic, and as our audience tends to be the very opposite of shy and retiring, I am sure I will hear them.
All of us at Contactless Intelligence very much look forward to meeting all our speakers, delegates and guests at the conference and award dinner, and to the award finalists - good luck!
Until next week.

PS - We have, as the lead video on the right, the film that accompanied the Barclaycard announcement as well as Proxama's Dr. Neil Garner speaking about marketing agency uptake of NFC technology (Proxama is also one of the finalists in the Best Marketing Campaign using Contactless/NFC Technology category at the CMA's this year). Joing Dr. Garner is David Harbidge, Head of Mobile Payments who demonstrates to us what could be the most secure mobile payment system in the world. I leave that for you to decide.
